Not all steel building manufacturers are equal in engineering depth, material quality, or warranty support. The manufacturing source determines the quality of what you receive.
What to listen for

Q2.Is the building engineered to my specific site's Alaska snow and wind loads?
Why ask this
Alaska snow loads vary dramatically by location. A building engineered to "Alaska requirements" or "regional standards" is not the same as one engineered to your site's specific design ground snow load.
What to listen for
Your supplier should ask for your location before providing engineering. If they don't ask, they're likely using generic regional load tables — which may be unsafe for your site.
Q3.What warranty comes with the building?
Why ask this
Warranties vary wildly in coverage, duration, and what's actually backed by the manufacturer vs. the dealer.
What to listen for
Superstructures: 25-year Varco Pruden structural warranty on primary framing. Ask for the specific warranty document — not a verbal summary.
Q4.What is the steel grade and coating?
Why ask this
Panel coatings and structural steel grades directly affect corrosion resistance and longevity — especially important in Alaska's coastal environments.
What to listen for
Ask specifically about the panel substrate (Galvalume vs. galvanized vs. painted only) and the paint system (PVDF vs. polyester). Galvalume substrate with PVDF paint is the highest-performing option.

Q5.What exactly is included in this price?
Why ask this
Steel building prices are often quoted as materials-only, packages-only, or shell-only — none of which include everything you need to have a finished building. Comparing quotes without understanding scope is meaningless.
What to listen for
Get a written scope of what's included. At minimum, understand: Does the price include engineering? Shipping to Alaska? Doors? Windows? Insulation? Foundation design?
Q6.What is the total project cost — not just the materials package?
Why ask this
The materials package is typically 30–50% of total project cost for a finished building. The rest is foundation, erection, doors, insulation, mechanical, and finish work.
What to listen for
An honest supplier will help you understand the total picture, not just their portion of it. Ask for a rough estimate of what you'll spend beyond their package.
Q7.What are the payment terms?
Why ask this
Payment schedules vary. Some suppliers require 100% upfront; others take deposits and balance at shipping.
What to listen for
Understand when each payment is due and what your recourse is if there are problems at each stage. Get payment terms in writing.
Q8.What are the conditions under which the price changes?
Why ask this
Steel prices fluctuate. Many quotes are valid for 30 days or less. If your project takes 6 months to permit and break ground, the price you were quoted may not hold.
What to listen for
Ask specifically: how long is this quote valid, and what triggers a price change?
Design & Customization
Q9.Can the dimensions be customized, and what does customization cost?
Why ask this
Package buildings are efficient but fixed in footprint. If you need a non-standard width, length, or eave height, you may need a custom build — which has different lead times and pricing.
What to listen for
Understand the boundary between package and custom, and what the cost and timeline difference is for your specific needs.
Q10.What eave height options are available?
Why ask this
Eave height determines what fits inside your building for its entire useful life. It's the one dimension you can't easily change later.
What to listen for
Don't just accept the "standard" eave height. Ask what heights are available and what the cost difference is to go one size up.
Q11.How are door openings incorporated, and what are the size limits?
Why ask this
Large door openings — especially in wide wall planes — affect the structural system. There are limits to how large a door opening can be without additional engineering.
What to listen for
If you need large commercial overhead doors, bi-fold hangar doors, or multiple large openings on one wall, verify the structural implications early — not after manufacturing.
Q12.What roof systems are available?
Why ask this
Standing seam vs. PBR screw-down roofs have dramatically different long-term performance in Alaska's snow country. Standing seam has no exposed fasteners; PBR does.
What to listen for
For any building in Alaska where heavy snow accumulates, ask specifically about standing seam. If the supplier only offers one option, ask why.

Why ask this
Lead times fluctuate based on manufacturing capacity and seasonal demand. Alaska's construction season is compressed — if you need a summer build, your ordering window is limited.

Get a specific lead time estimate, not "approximately 3 months." Ask when you need to place the order to hit your target delivery date.

Ask specifically: who is responsible for freight damage claims, what is the timeline for replacements, and what documentation you need to do at delivery.
