How it works
Flatbed truck(s) travel the Alaska Highway from the manufacturing facility in the Lower 48, crossing the border at Tok or Beaver Creek and delivering to your site or a designated freight terminal. Multiple trucks may be needed for larger buildings.
Lead time
2–3 weeks from shipping date
Delivery trucks need adequate access — a turning radius for a semi-truck combination and a firm surface. Confirm site access before delivery.
Ferry / Alaska Marine Highway

How it works
Freight is truck-transported to a Lower 48 port (typically Bellingham, WA) and loaded on the Alaska Marine Highway System or similar roll-on/roll-off ferry service. Delivery to a marine freight terminal in your community.
Lead time
3–5 weeks including staging
Ferry schedules vary seasonally. Plan around ferry schedules, especially in winter when service may be reduced.
Barge — Coastal & Island Communities

How it works
Freight is staged at a hub port (Anchorage, Seattle) and loaded on barge service. Barge schedules are typically monthly or bi-monthly in summer only. Delivery to the barge offload point in your community — you handle final site delivery.

4–8 weeks; barge-schedule-dependent
Barge delivery may have additional freight costs not included in the standard package price. Confirm early.
Air Freight — Remote Off-Road Sites

How it works
For very remote sites, individual components may be air-freighted on cargo planes or broken down for small aircraft. This is expensive and requires careful pre-planning of component weights and dimensions. Superstructures can coordinate this with early notice.
Lead time
1–4 weeks (air) + planning time
Air freight for steel building components is costly. Contact Superstructures very early for remote air-freight sites — logistics planning adds significant lead time.
Where Superstructures' Responsibility Starts and Ends
Understanding the handoff points prevents surprises. Here's the clear breakdown:
Site Preparation for Delivery
Access road
The delivery truck needs a clear path in and enough room to turn around. Semi combinations are typically 60–70' long. Confirm your access road can handle this.
Surface condition
Soft ground in spring (breakup) is one of the most common delivery problems. If delivery coincides with spring breakup, confirm the access road is firm.
Receiving personnel
Someone must be on-site to receive, inspect, and sign for the delivery. Do not arrange delivery for a day when no one can be present.
Unloading equipment
Steel components are heavy and awkward. You'll need a forklift, tractor with forks, or similar equipment to offload. Confirm you have this on-site or arranged.
Temporary storage
If erection doesn't begin immediately, plan where you'll store the steel. Panels must be stored flat and off the ground on dunnage to prevent permanent bowing.
Foundation timing
Ideally your foundation is complete before delivery. If not, plan where the steel will be stored while foundation work finishes.
